The Low Pass

Project concept This project explores the horror of uncertainty and the anticipation of catastrophe. It examines what happens to social interaction when a subtle disruption of the familiar order makes ordinary communication impossible. How does fear — caused by uncertainty and the feeling of an approaching threat — begin to shape the body and social behavior before the danger even takes a definite form? The project began with an observation of how a minor disturbance within a collective situation can radically transform the behavior of a group. I am interested in a moment when people remain inside a familiar scenario, yet can no longer act as if nothing has changed. A connection between them begins to collapse through an almost invisible rupture. The project presents a society suspended in fear. Catastrophe does not appear as an event, but as the anticipation of its possible arrival. Installation concept In the installation I work with a state of dread in anticipation of catastrophe. It presents a football field with frozen figures of children, as if they have seen something in the sky. Their bodies still bear traces of an interrupted game, yet attention and gesture are turned beyond the scene. The figures respond to something absent from the space and inaccessible to the viewer’s gaze. The installation does not show the source of anxiety and does not ask the viewer to reconstruct the event. It addresses a state in which anticipation begins to act before the event itself. Through the position of bodies and the structure of space, the work examines the moment when uncertainty becomes part of everyday reality and affects collective existence before any cause of catastrophe appears.
